Dead of Night (Hardy Boys Casefiles, No 80)

Franklin W. Dixon at his best!!!!
I always enjoyed collecting Hardy Boys novels and this one is my absolute favourite! Whenever I finish a chapter on a Hardy Boys book I usually put it down and wait for another time to read the next chapter when I'm in the mood, but I just wanted to keep reading this one! Joe gets haunted by spirits of a recent death from a girl and another haunting from his old girlfriend Iola Morton(who died from a bombing in the first Casefiles novel). This is full of suspense with plenty of unsolved mysteries! A definite book for Hardy Boys readers!

One of those non-stop, edge of your seat, kinda books
I read this book not very long ago, and I have to say it was one of those non-stop, edge of your seat, kinda books. It was origional, emotional, spine tingling and pretty much incredible! The brothers are really put to the test this time. Joe suffers through the death of the girl he loves once again when a bomb blows up Vanessa's boat - with her on it. The harsh reality of what Joe has and is going through hit's Frank when Callie is killed also. The surprising turn of events in this novel are astounding, and it's one book I HAVE to read again. I recomend it to anyone, Hardy Boy fan or not

Halloween Horror
Halloween has now become very real. Not in costumes but horror and murder. Joe's new friend Vanessa is killed just as Iola Morton was and the dead have come to haunt Bayport! When Vanessa's boat blows up with Vanessa in it the horror begins. After experiencing Iola's murder, Joe can't believe when she comes back to get him. Seeing the death of his girlfriend and his mother, Joe is the target for death in this book. Going to the cemetary where Iola is remembered, Joe sees all his worst nightmares come true! All the criminals he has fought are back from the dead. If you are into action, this is the book for you!

Brother Against Brother

Really Exciting
The book starts out with Joe on his way to Colorado to deliver a message to a man in witness protection . Before he can give it to him another man sends Joe over a cliff in the trunk of his car . When he awakens he can't remember who he is or anything except that a hitman is after him. Meanwhile in Bayport Frank is worried about not hearing from him sets ( His dad giving him only 24 hours ) out to find his brother . Still not remembering anything Joe meets Rita who helps him . When Joe sees Frank he thinks Frank is the hitman out to kill him . This book brings up memories of when Joe lost Iola and brings up how Frank feels about his brother . With trouble nipping at both brothers' heals throughout the book leaves you on the edge of your seat . I loved this book and would read it again and again .

THE BEST
This book is the best out of all the casefiles. It shows how close the bond is between Frank and Joe, and what would happened if they ever found themselves seperated. The plot is so simple, yet so compelling, that sometimes it can bring a tear to the eye.

This is THE book to find.

A great adventeristic novel!!!
One of the best Hardy Boys novels. Joe suddenly loses his memory from a head injury and now thinks that his brother is his enemy. There's nothing more to say except to read this excellent novel!! Find out the whole situation on this story, you won't be disappointed!

Lessons of the Game: The Untold Story of High School Football
Published in Paperback by GameTimePublishing (September, 1999)
Authors: Derek Sparks, Stuart K. Robinson, and Dale Dixon
Average review score:

Lessons of the Game...................truely appalling!
READ IT, BUY IT, PASS IT ON! This is at best what I can say about Lessons of the Game. Derek Sparks submerges his readers with scandal and corruption which leaves them baffled. His profound, unfortunately true, story of manipulation and lies within our society is well written. If nothing else, it will provoke readers(athletes or non athletes) to see what is truely important: God, Family, Love, Education, etc.

Lessons of the Game
This is a definite must for student athletes as well as parents of student athletes. I am a parent and my child will most likely be involved in school athletics as he gets older and this opened my eyes to the troubles that can emerge. His honesty was refreshing and much needed in the world of sports where secrecy and the "curtain of silence" prevail over any truth telling. This book needs to get out to young athletes to show them how much education is needed and not to get caught up in all the hype that coaches, family and friends can feed you about sports. Keep up the good work!

Offensive Interference...
This is an absolutely must read for anyone who loves sports stories (but should be required reading for lettering high school athletes). I could not put it down! The book paints a vivid, yet disturbing picture of the exploitation of a "can't miss" superstar-high school football player, by the system. It takes you through Derek Sparks' incredible "on-the-field" successes and lets you see how many of the people he trusted, sold him out, "off-the-field." This book depicts a situation which serves as the predecessor to (what most likely will be)future exploitation by "star" athletes, next at the collegiate level and later by agents and money managers, who all want a piece of "the pie" and will do anything to get it.

BETTER THAN I HAD THOUGHT
This book was really good. I couldn't put it down until I finished. It's only 108 pages. I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I did. I definatly recommend it for readers who are fans of science fiction and suspense. I am not a fan of sci. fic., but I am of suspense and I really enjoyed this book.

Very cool book!
This book is way cool! I am an X-phile to the extreme, I could not sleep good for at least one week, this book is wonderfully written and I would reccomend it to anyone who belives that there are places and things best left alone

AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD STINK!!!
I read this book a few months ago. At first, I thought it would stink, but my friend kept nagging me about how good it was, so I just borrowed it from a library, read it and did not stop reading it (And I mean I did not stop reading it, I finished it in an hour because I was so attached to it)! I highly recommend it (especially for X-Files fans). Now, I try to read it every day!!!

Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place
Published in Hardcover by Pantheon Books (May, 2000)
Authors: Terry Tempest Williams and Dan Frank
Average review score:

The perfect marraige of nature and family life. . .
Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting and attending a reading by Terry Tempest Williams, author of Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place. At the time, I was unfamiliar with her work, but I was nevertheless astounded by her presentation. Immediately, I bought two of her novels-- one of which was Refuge. When I read it a few months after meeting her, I was amazed at the tone and emotion in the text. Williams' book can be a source of peace or healing to many whether you have experienced cancer, a loss, or just adore nature. The language is rich yet gentle. The structure of the narrative is such that, during reading and after, a reader feels she has experiences a unique marriage of nature and family issues. The way in which Williams weaves the Great Salt Lake and its inhabitants with her own family's suffering is not only amazing but especially touching as well. Just as the waterfowl and other creatures are evicted from their home during the great rise and flood of Salt Lake, so does William's mother fight for the domicile and dominance in her own cancerous body.
This is a must read. A wonderful story of love, hardships, and more love, REFUGE is a truly breathtaking piece of art.

Excellent weaving together of place and heart
Now that I have read Terry Tempest Williams' excellent book on finding refuge in the areas around the Great Salt Lake, I find I want to visit, to see for myself the stunning landscape and myriad of birdlife. I also find myself drawn to this courageous woman who lets us into this difficult part of her life, as her mother passes into the shadow of cancer. Not for the first time, we learn, and not such a rare occurrence in her family, we discover; a discovery that, for me, evoked anger at the unfairness of exposing human beings to atomic bomb test fallout. There is so much in this book: the detailed descriptions of the birds and their habits, the extraordinary unfolding of the progression of cancer and its effect on the family, the interplay of three women -- grandmother, mother, daughter -- and through it all, the gentle and exquisite writing carried me nearly effortlessly, yet with great strength. I can find no fault with the writing, the evocative images, the revelation of relationships, and the treatment of this undoubtedly amazing place. Thank you, Terry, for writing this book.

A refuge becomes a sanctuary
As the Great Salt Lake rose to submerge and destroy the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, grief rose and submerged Terry Tempest William's spirit with the destruction of her mother and grandmother by cancer. The gradual regeneration of the Refuge with the subsiding of the lake parallels the regeneration of her spirit and the subsiding of her grief. But the pain and the scars remain and transform. Terry is no longer an accepting trusting Mormon daughter but a searching questioning activist after her tumultuous emotional experience. One wonders if the gifts of awareness and sensitivity are worth the price of the pain endured. The Refuge becomes a sanctuary for the returning birds and Terry's returning spirit. No more moving piece has been written about the folly and ultimate tragedy of human intervention in the environment. From the nuclear testing of the 1950s to the manipulation of the level of the Great Salt Lake, there is much to learn about the long term consquences of our short sighted acts. Everyone should read and reread and pass on this book.

Hunting for Hidden Gold

Once you start reading, you cant stop
Hardy Boys, Hunting for Hidden Gold is one of the best books I have read in my life. It combines mystery, adventure, and suspense all crammed in one book. The Hardy Boys series is a really great series. I usually don't like mystery books but this one is really good.Unlike some books that have boring parts. Hunting for Hidden Gold doesn't have any boring parts. That is very good. I really don't like parts where they just talk and talk about boring things that don't interest me. The Hardy Boys have been around for awhile and people still read them. Hardy Boys can be read by all ages. it is not really hard to read. In the whole Hardy Boys series there are 58 books. I am looking forward to reading more books from the series. Hunting for Hidden Gold is a sort of long book. It is about 150 pages long. That is not too long but it is not very short either. Since it is long, it gets lots of action in it. If it was any longer, it would have some boring parts in it. In conclusion, this book deserves five stars.

Incredible!!
... This book is excellent; definately one of the top three of the series. The action starts on page 1 and doesn't let up until the book is finished. Hunting For Hidden Gold has perhaps the best mystery out of all of the books in the series and is written quite well unlike most of the books put out after the early 1950s. The book is very exciting, as quite often Frank and Joe are chasing, or being chased by, the criminals. Definately one of the best, no Hardy Boys fan should miss this one.

Exiting, Fun, and a little Scary!
If you like to explore secret passage ways or disguise yourself as someone else, if you like to go on adventures and fight the bad guy while solving a mystery, than this is the book for you. I have read several of the Hardy Boys Mysteries that happened before this and this was one of my favorites! Not only will you read just how the boys escape from the bad guys but also you can learn some nice, cunning tricks to make your enemy run!

After Man: A Zoology of the Future
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Pub (November, 1986)
Authors: Dougal Dixon and Outlet
Average review score:

Buy this for a grade school science teacher you know!
There are few books that I routinely give as gifts, but this is one of them. I just love Dougal Dixon's work, and wish every day that The New Dinosaurs: An Alternate Evolution would be put back into print. The imagination of this artist/scientist is off the charts. This book is a field guide to a world that won't exist for 65 million years, when humanity has lost its foothold and has vanished from the face of the Earth. All the animals domesticated by man are gone, as are most of the other fauna we know. The dominant species of this future world, in Dixon's imagining, are evolved from the rats, rabbits, crows, and other pests that humans could never eliminate...and thus they inherate the world when our kind are gone. If you'd like to have a really bad nightmare, imagine being chased through the woods by giant rat-wolves called Falanxes, or stalked by the blind bat-gorillas called Screachers. My favorite is the Vortex, the giant penguin that rules the seas of the future. I love looking through the pages of this book and discovering things I never noticed before. I've given it for birthdays, Christmases, and just-because occasions...it never fails to disappoint. I have a copy of the New Dinosaurs I found on ebay. With any luck this will be available on Amazon one day... it is even better than After Man - and it shows us what dinosaurs would have evolved into today if they had not gone extinct. Please tell as many people as you can about this artist...I think children and adults can really enjoy this brilliant imagination and bizarre menagerie. I am a huge fan.

Keeps your sense of wonder alive
This book really should be better known. The illustrations are beautiful, for one thing, but the premise behind the book is absolutely fantastic. Dixon dares to conjecture about what future forms life might take on, given a few million more years of evolution. His results are always intriguing, and the reader is left with a strong sense of him-or-her self as being in the MIDDLE of the process of evolution, not at its end. If you are still in school; if you have children; or if, like me, you just hope to have children someday, you ought to just pick thi ( ) up right now. It causes you to look with new eyes at the fauna around you -- pigeons, chipmunks, dogs, birds... what evolutionary forces are acting on them RIGHT NOW? What impact might those forces have, given a few million years to work their magic? Would a new kind of dog develop? Perhaps one with... oh, I don't know, maybe a rainbow-colored dog with wings, suited by evolution for survival due to camoflage ability in urban areas with centuries of accumulated graffiti. And the wings, perhaps developed as a mutation, might let it flee the area more quickly in case of a nuclear attack. (The author mostly deals with pastoral, natural terrain, not post-nuclear-holocause wastelands, for the record). I am kidding about the dog, of course, but these are the sort of things that you will find yourself preoccupied by, after leafing through this beautiful text. Definitely worth it.

Creative, educational, and just plain fun!
"After Man" is one of the most engaging, creative books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. While one might think from its outlandish illustrations that it is a book for children, this is simply not the case. That's not to say a ten or eleven year old wouldn't enjoy this book, but there's plenty an adult can take away from it as well.

Beginning with a basic review of the principles of biology and evolution, Dixon proceeds to apply them across a range of environments on an Earth 50 million years removed from mankind. The result is a menagerie of remarkable creatures. Remarkable in that they are frequently unique, even bizarre, but even more remarkable because they represent the result of a familiar creature's evolution. Dixon's world isn't a fantasyland, every creature in it holds true to the principles he so effectively explains in the first chapter. Moreover, they all fill an important ecological niche; he hasn't created 150 pages of carnivores. Rather, he presents a balanced, albeit limited, ecosystem that sheds light on the state of our own environment today.

Beautifully illustrated and highly engaging, "After Man" is a must read for anyone interested in evolution and anthropology. Furthermore, this book is educational without being heavy handed. One by no means needs to be an expert to learn from and enjoy this very unique work.

What Happened at Midnight
Published in Hardcover by Price Stern Sloan Pub (June, 1967)
Author: Franklin W. Dixon
Average review score:

Better Than The Original Edition
This review concerns the revised 1967 edition. Mr. Hardy asks Frank and Joe to "break into" the house of a neighbour and retrieve a secret invention to prevent it from being stolen by a gang of thieves he is currently investigating. Later, at a party at Chet's home, Joe is kidnapped at the stroke of midnight. Frank, along with some friends, must find Joe and learn why he was kidnapped; as well, the Hardy's have to keep the gang from stealing the invention. Personally, I preferred this edition to the original. The original edition was better written; although, that is true in most cases. However, I found that revised edition had a more interesting mystery and it had a lot more action. I don't consider this book to be one of the best of the series, but it is far from being one of the worst.

An Average Book
This review concerns the original 1931 edition. At the stroke of midnight, Joe is kidnapped from a party at the Morton farm and Frank and his chums set out, not only to find Joe, but to discover why he was kidnapped. I'd more accurately give the book a rating of 3.5 stars. The writing, like with all previous volumes, is excellent and the mystery is alright, but the book doesn't quite live up to the intriguing title. Mr. Hardy does not make an appearance in the book as he is said to be on a case out West and, in my opinion, his omission only hurts the story. Most readers would probably not rate this book as one of their favorites in the set, but they probably wouldn't rate it as one of their least favorites either.

Midnight Madness
The odd thing about this book is that all the action occurs at the stroke of twelve midnight. The book starts with the Hardys breaking into a house, with Mr. Hardy's permission! They take a top-secret invention to hide for the owner. This is when the action begins. Then while at a party, Iola spots someone snopping around the brothers' car. When Joe goes after him, he ends up being kidnapped. Follow the adventure as Frank tries to find his brother and crack the case! This is one of my personal favorites!

Sinister Sign Post (Hardy Boys, No. 15)
Published in Library Binding by Putnam Pub Group Library (October, 1975)
Author: Franklin W. Dixon
Average review score:

Very Exciting
This review concerns the revised 1968 edition. Mr. Hardy, Frank and Joe are hired by Mr. Alden, the president of a company that makes experimental race cars and motors. Three of their drivers have had accidents while on test drives because the windshields of their cars suddenly went white and blocked their vision. Alden is afraid that someone is trying to sabotage his company and steal a top-secret experimental motor. The theft of Alden's race horse, Topnotch, further complicates the mystery. This book is quite good; it is packed with action, mystery and suspence. The plot is interesting and would probably appeal to most young readers and even older fans of the series. However, I am disappointed with the manner in which the criminals were captured. It was purely by dumb luck and reminded me of something that would have happened in an episode of Inspector Gadget. Also, I didn't like it that the Hardy's friends were largely ignored in this book; Chet is the only one used to any extent and even he isn't really involved in the mystery. Despite this, I did enjoy the book and I would recommend it to other fans.

AN OUTSTANDING PREFORMANCE
This book was terrific! I don't know about you but this was superb. Its was when a orange dragster bumps into the Hardy Boy's convertable. This leaves the Hardys mystified. Mr. Hardy talks to his sons about a mystery and wants his sons to help him solve his mystery. This is an enjoyable book.

One Of The Best
This review concerns the original 1936 edition. Suspicious events at a home in Bayport and the disappearance of a valuable race horse combine to make one of the most interesting and exciting Hardy Boys books. This book was great; well-written, well-paced, and the mystery was highly intriguing. This book has one of the best endings of all of the Hardy Boys books that I have read and is especially good from page 172 on. It's an excellent book that I would recommend to all Hardy Boys fans.
